She Doesn't Work, She Has an At Home Business!
When you work at home, many people think you are free all day to run errands, car pool, babysit, or do things that you just do not have time to do.
The problem is that many people just do not see working at home as a legitimate business the way they would view a Police Officer or a Doctor. After all, you can set your own schedule, so why can't you be available to pick up their little Tommy from school, drop him off and hockey practice, then deliver him home an hour later?
Here are a few ways to make well intended people see you as a business professional.
* Don't take any old call, get Caller Identification if you don't already have it. This way you won't miss any calls from clients, and you won['t have to spend an hour on the phone with your best buddy while she complains about her latest date. (unless you an incredible multi-tasker).
*Call Identification will help you weed out those annoying "oh, I'm sure she can do this" calls. Some phone companies even offer the option of multiple voice messages, or multiple phone numbers with different ring tones for a small fee (usually around 5.00 a month). Y
ou can let your answering service pick up saying you are busy with a client and to please leave a message.
Something like "Hi, you have reached Jessie at TYN. I may be with a client right now and am unable to take your call. Please leave a message and I will return your phone call as soon as possible. Thank you."
*When someone does call you and asks you to do something "right now" but it is not convenient for you, consider offering an alternative.
"I'm sorry, Karen, but I have a deadline and will be unable to leave the office all day. I am free at seven if you would like me to do it for you then."
Make sure all friends, family and play date buddies know that you have a work schedule like everyone else and although you can be flexible that it is important to stick to a well organized schedule for your family and your business.
If you let people know that you have set hours, and that you aren't available at the drop of the hat (except for emergencies, of course), you will be able show that you are a professional and you are truly running a business, even if your office is in your home.
If all else fails and they still wish to interrupt you know matter what, then it might be time to think about ending a toxic relationship if not built on respect. Good luck!
